We got the news that our application was approved, and then it was forward with the search. Recalling that we had requested a little boy, we were surprised to find that our agency presented us with a little girl. However, a custody battle ensued over her, so we backed away. I had also entered for further infertility treatment, and the first round was unsuccessful. Two months later, we tried again, and were overjoyed with the news that I was pregnant. In the Lord’s great wisdom and sense of humor, he gave us the exact same due date as with our special Angel. So, again, we celebrated Christmas with extra great joy and expectation.
In February, we were presented with the profile of another little girl from Russia. Her file looked fine, and although her pictures were rather somber and difficult to get a reading on her personality, we decided to accept her. Our facilitator told us that she seemed extremely intelligent, and that we should push her when we got her.
Well, the months passed, we got more photos and she grew more and more beautiful in our eyes and in the pictures. I remember clearly seeing one photo in which she was standing, and it was like that was MY DAUGHTER standing there like a big girl. She already was a part of our family. We were already proudly sharing her photos and accomplishments with family and friends.
Our facilitator decided to take a slow approach, as they had heard of couples who were pregnant during the time of the adoption court hearing have the Judge either deny outright, or put off the adoption until after the baby was born. So, we decided to try to finalize things after the baby was born.
Although we wanted a boy initially, we accepted a girl as a gift from God. Little did we know that God was going to give us a little boy as well. So, only two days later, on August, 22nd, our sweet little Callum was born. We decided on the name Callum not only because we liked it, but also because it meant bringer of peace, or dove. We felt like God had given us a new beginning, and finally a sense of peace to our lives.
We already felt like we were a two child family, and had both rooms ready, as we had no idea of when we might be called away to finish the adoption. We had lined up Medical Specialists to look at her immediately upon getting our daughter home, and had also lined up a Nanny who had experience in Special Needs children to help give us an assessment of her upon arrival. Callum grew quickly, and he was a special boy from day one. Instead of sleeping the first few days away, he spent a great deal of his waking time taking absolutely everything into his brain.
We waited for the call to leave for Russia, and we knew things were getting close when we kept getting requests for updated papers. But, little did we know how much things were changing there, and that we would come perilously close to losing our daughter.
To be continued...
