Introducing our new Pregnancy column!

"Hello!  I'm excited about the opportunity to share with you my experiences and education about one of the most exciting times in a woman's life - pregnancy.  It was the journey in conceiving my 3rd baby that led me to devour books and magazines on the subject of human reproduction.  During the 16 month journey I began to do what I love - write and write what I know.  Now, almost 3 years later with my third child celebrating her first birthday - I am happily beginning this new column all about pregnancy.  My motto is "education is knowledge and knowledge is the power that eliminates fear." - Lori

The Highest High

Of all the special events that happen in a woman’s life – first dances, high school graduation, wedding, honeymoon – nothing compares to the most special event of all – giving birth to your own child.  The single most exciting, exhilarating event in a woman’s life is giving birth.

The happiest moment in my own life was the moment my son was born; followed by the births of my 2 daughters, all other events in my life pails in comparison.  The journey does not end with the birth.  You find yourself in the afterglow of childbirth faced with a lifetime calling – the highest of all callings – motherhood.

It’s true what they say – you carry a child for 9 months in your womb and you carry that child for the rest of your life in your heart.  Motherhood truly takes on a new dimension once you hold your baby in your arms.  You realize the paramount responsibility you have to nurture this tiny creature, to keep this child alive, to raise them into responsible adults that will become tomorrow’s leaders.  It’s a task not to be taken lightly.

But before all this takes place, you, the mother, get to have this child all to yourself for about 9 months.  It’s during these months that the most wonderful miracle takes place – life.  It’s the most wonderful feeling in the world to be full of life – to experience quickening, to ensure our future as mankind.

Pregnancy to me is such an awesome time in my life.  I marvel at the life growing within as I look forward to that wonderful birth day.  Pregnancy is my favorite time, even with all the problems I encountered – gestational diabetes, yeast infections, pre-term labor, and bed rest.  It was all worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.  To experience the joy of seeing the positive pregnancy test, of seeing those “two lines” truly begins the journey with the excitement of a child opening presents on Christmas morning.

Nothing can compare to hearing the heartbeat of a tiny little one, so small you really don’t believe they’re there.  Experiencing the first little flutters that tickle, later on turning into kicks, you swear your baby will become the next kick-boxing champion.  Seeing the grainy image on the monitor as the ultra-sound technician glides the wand across your swelling abdomen.  Even when strangers come up to “pat” the obvious bulge in your middle – these are indeed special times.

I truly believe that we are given 9 months to revel in the new life, to train us for that special finale/beginning – the birth day.  It is this passion that I have for pregnancy, for childbirth, for new life, that I focus my time in experiencing, in research and in writing.  I wish to share of my experiences, to educate and to encourage.

The highest high is motherhood and it all begins with pregnancy and childbirth.
