A Letter From Hanan

It was with great sadness that I have read of several hate posts on Islamic Internet sites.

As you may know, I am a Muslim, and I was appalled to see that this had happened. My girls have been having a hard time with some of the anti-Muslim sentiments being reported in the media. I have tried my hardest to explain to them that people are hurt and it is a natural reaction. I have also tried very hard to explain that it is a small minority who feel this way. I have impressed upon them that this was NOT an act of a true Muslim, but a group of fanatics who thought they were Muslims.

I made a point of showing the hate posts to my girls, to show them that hatred is a two way street. My four older children, aged 14, 12, 11 and 6 would like to express their sincere regret that some so-called Muslims feel the need to express themselves this way. I add my voice to theirs, and that of every true Muslim. My youngest, 1 1/2 is blissfully unaware of the events of this week, and I hope and pray she never has to experience the pain we have all felt at this atrocious event.

Let us hope that out of the misery comes understanding and compassion, and not hatred.
